On Favorite Things | Water Street Dreams Chicago family photographer

I’m a big fan of networking and sharing resources.
Huge.

I wanna hear what you love these days,
because I’m more apt to try it if you recommend it.

Do you have a favorite place you go for Thai?
I’ve gotta know.

Favorite book?
Tell me right this second.

New secret handshake?
Please, do show.

So I thought I’d go ahead and share
some random things I’m into these days.

Obviously, Coco and walking through the woods.
Favorite place to keep track of books that I want to read?
Goodreads.
Sign up now.
FREE.

When someone recommends a book that you want to read,
pop open that app,
type it in,
tell it you want to read it some day,
and voila,
it keeps it for you.
Saves your pretty little head
from remembering
all.the.things.
Very important for those of us approaching 50.

Are your people scattered the globe over like mine?
MarcoPolo app.
You pull up a friend’s name,
(or a group that you’ve created),
leave a little video when you have time,
and then they watch it when they have time.
Tag, they’re it.
Easy.
FREE.

You don’t have to know how to operate a fancy video cam.
You just have to press start on your smart phone camera
and hope your double-chin doesn’t look too large-ish.
And if they’re your bffs,
they won’t care anyway.
Favorite book these days?
Many.
Too many to count.
Follow me on Goodreads
and you’ll get a sense for the books I’m reading.
Social justice. Memoirs. Biographies. WWII.
Lots of all of those.
Favorite podcast(s)
Admittedly,
I just jumped on the Podcast wagon this fall.
And officially,
I'm addicted.
Like, SO addicted.

I use the Castbox app on my Samsung phone
and subscribe to a few channels.

And then voila,
when I want something to listen to
as I’m schlepping the children all over the planet,
I simply see the ones I’ve downloaded
(for free, hello.)
and then I press play on the one that seems
most intriguing in the moment.

Here are a few of my faves:
Story Podcast
Women’s Work by Tsh Oxenreider
Around the World

I’m all about hearing someone’s story
and hearing interviews with creative people
and entrepreneur tips/tricks,
so those are my faves.

I’m sure if you’re into fly fishing
or taekwondo,
or coniferous forests,
or international politics,
there’s a podcast for you.
Search up what you love
and have a listen.
 Chores around the house
have become exponentially more exciting
as I tote around my phone in a big cup
(because that helps the sound travel,
thank you very much for that science tip of the day)
while I fold towels.
And wash plates.
All the plates.
And dust the bunnies.
(Who am I kidding?
I don’t dust the bunnies.
Loathesome job
clearly overrated this side of heaven.)

And so, there you have it.
A few of my favorite things these days.
Locals,
if you’re looking for my favorites,
here you go:

Favorite hair colorist and stylist:
Tara and Peter over at Salon Republic
Go see them.
They will change your lives forever.

Favorite Threader:
Meera’s on Canfield in Park Ridge
Because some of us have thick eyebrows.

Favorite Panera Bread:
The one on Touhy and Central in Skokie –
beautiful and bright and it’s where I write each week.

It has my heart.
Favorite new shortcut from church to Jefferson Park:
Hello Talcott Avenue to I-90
you are my new best friend.

Favorite husband:
My Jack man.
Best man on the planet.

Favorite sanity savers in the middle of Chicago’s winter:
Garfield Park Conservatory and the Chicago Botanic Gardens.
Favorite local Theatre:
Windy City Performs, at Milwaukee and Lawrence.

Shameless plug.
Jackson will be Oliver in the upcoming professional show Oliver.
This one is gonna be amazing.
I guarantee it.
Look for his cast and tell me if you're coming.

And that’s all I’ve got, folks.
Have a superb weekend
where you love your people well,
where you show up to this one life you get,
and most importantly,
where you read until your nap begins.
