I'm Going To Read, So No Talking
Maddie somehow thinks she gets dibs on the decibel level in the car. If she wants to talk she is a LOUD talker {perhaps like someone else I know}. And then, if she's reading she bursts out in "I'm going to read so NO talking!!!!!!" Even if none of us were talking to begin with, she just has to throw that out there, claiming the air space and the noise level in the car. Not sure how she got rights to that, but oh well. She's reading so I can't complain!
Okay, so I checked out the front cover of some of my Nancy Drew books and I was reading those books in 1981, which means I was twelve at the time.
And Maddie, who is 7 (closer to 8) is actually beginning to read them now. When she saw the date in one of the books she snickered and said, "Mom, you were OLD when you read this." Ah, ya my dear, that's because you're YOUNG reading them. I was a right-on-target kind of kid. So there. She started this book last night. And she's almost done it this morning. And she can't put it down {sounds like someone else I know, Mother.} So right now, she's racing through her homework {that she failed to do last night because she was sneakily READING} so that she can finish the last chapters before school.
I must say that as much as I wish she had obeyed last night and done her homework, I have to believe that her love of reading will carry her way farther in life than "vowel sounds in fall" and "fractions" .... {but I do recognize the importance of obeying and responsibility and better grades.... it's just a balance thing for me.} Oh, and for the record, I've never seen Maddie do her homework so quickly, accurately and without asking for help. She.is.on.a.mission.to.finish.her.book.
And so, Carolyn Keene, another generation is crazy about your books.

*And as I'm editing this post she just ran upstairs and said, "Mommy, I'm finished my 6th Nancy Drew book. Gobbie isn't gonna believe how many I've already read!"
